Men’s Round of 24 action at the 2010 Drug Aware Pro began this morning at Margaret River in huge waves at Surfers’ Point. It wasn't quite the swell we had been waiting for, but still, it's far from small. Local favourite and current World Number 1 Taj Burrow progressed easily into the Round of 16, winning Heat 1 of the morning.

Burrow advanced without any of the last-minute dramas of yesterday, finding an early, high scoring wave in the first five minutes of his heat and winning through with a score of 14.17. He finished well ahead of second place Marco Giorgio from Uruguay who also went through to the final 16 with a heat score of 9.77. Fresh out of the water, Burrow commented “It was good to get an early wave. I much prefer to do it that way. It was a good wave and I heard the judges score it a 7.6 so I was pretty happy.”

Surfers in the early heats were met with big, glassy conditions. “There was definitely a couple of monsters out there,” said Burrow. “It definitely got our hearts pumping. I just picked off a couple of the ‘little’ ten footers and dodged the close out sets during that heat.” Burrow will now face Spain’s Aritz Aranburu in the Round of 16 heats, expected to begin late this morning at Surfers’ Point.
