SB SALT FEST 2010
Im guessing by now you wanna know what happened at the Soggybones Salt Fest?
Perry Lakes Skatepark, Perth Western Australia. Sunday 19th December 2010.
Let's start with the basics. The SB Salt Fest was Soggybones first real event. The mag founders, Luke and Justin found their feet and started skateboarding in the Western Suburbs of Perth W.A. Their local park was Perry Lakes Skatepark. So to pay tribute to the park that holds the majority of their childhood memories, the pair decided Perry Lakes was the ideal location to host the Salt Fest. An event that celebrated skateboarding, good times and SB Magazine. As much as this event was for the people, it was for Soggybones. It has been a tough year to commence a new mag and it's longevity seriously depends on the support from the people of Western Australia.
Sunday arrived and we didn't really know who or what to expect. We knew people had been waiting to shred, but we seriously had no clue 120+ people were going to rock up and destroy the lips and coping. By 3pm the park's southern end was lined with skateboarders and onlookers who were more than down to get involved, cheer the skaters on, and make the most of a great day. Special thanks to the ladies who rocked up looking so fine, the fellas appreciated it.
As the day rolled on, the level of skateboarding progressed, and being a tranny park meant almost 99% of the action was happening above the coping. Some crazy shit was going down and you could tell the core who entered the jam weren't really getting hyped for a win, they just wanted to sweat and put on a show. And fuck man, they did! As about 20 skaters drew speed lines all around the park, the SB crew took a step back and retreated to BBQ duties and tried to maintain some form of order. Actually that's a lie. Us men just soaked up the vibes, we didn't really cook fuck all! So thanks heaps to Chenee and Menique for holding down the BBQ and Merchandise stand. I'm not going to argue...sex sells! Oh and to our old man John, you are the master at selling snaggers, top work big boy!
Back to the park. We kicked the day off with an all for all skate-o-rama. Young and old, good, bad and ugly jumped on their boards and worked up a sweat to some old school beats supplied by good friend Joe D. Fuck Jay Z, we had Joe D, you're the man. I'm not going to bore you with an extensive run-down, so as a summary, a mad jam went down, we designated areas of the park for crew to go all out and stomp best trick, their was a game of skate and their was a whole heap of other shit that I can't be assed writing about. As they say, a picture is worth 1000 words. And if you can't feel the vibe from the pictures, I guess more fool you for not coming down. See ya next year for another day on the park!
Thanks to all of the people who rocked up, bought magazines, smashed back the hot dogs and purchased a Soggybones T-shirt. Cheers to Darren for coming along and filming, keep an eye out for his epic clip which shouldn't be too far off. Thanks also to Caleb, Chenee and Miller for rocking up and taking photos.
